Benefits of the Sponge Tip Applicator
Hi lovely people.
A fellow newbie and I were discussing something very instrumental to make-up application. Ummm…the applicator! We got into this bronzed (a notch down from heated, hehe, get it?) spat about the brush and the sponge.
A true newbie doesn’t make much of a distinction between the two. Shooot, a great deal of us are a step up from using our fingers to apply eye shadow. And don’t act like you didn’t do it. *looks around* Or still does it..
But really….which gives better color pay off? Applying eye shadow with a brush or sponge?
Now the newbie who thinks she knows something would say, “The brush of course,” And while I can’t deny the majestic wonders of blending brushes and angled brushes, we can’t neglect some of the pretty nifty tricks that the sponge tip provides.
Oh yes girl…I’m not even playin’. I know you thought that it was the epitome of newbism but I have found that the sponge tip applicator can deliver exceptional color payoff for pigments and eye shadows.
Say you want a very vibrant look. I mean, so vibrant that people can see the detail on your lids in a dark club. Your pal, the sponge tip applicator is a pro at allowing you to pack on color. And when I say pack, try wetting it just a bit and dabbing color continuously in the same area. A brush, of course, can do the same thing but not to the magnitude that a spongey can. Don’t believe me? Check out this vid that I did.
[Quick Disclaimer] I’m lookin’ a little tired from workin’ alllll day so please excuse that. Also, my implications are not that sponges are BETTER than brushes, just that they too have beneficial uses. ]
….but is this just me? How do yall feel about using sponge tip applicators? Newbies and pros, tell me your views! Click the link below to visit the video review.

I agree. I mostly use brushes to apply my eyeshadow with but when I want to blend my liner in, i use a sponge, especially for smoky eyes.
I am going to try this!
OOOOHHHH i am so glad you posted this I was telling someone just the other day that the sponge is great for color intensity and they looked at me like i was crazy saying that i just dont know how to use the brush properly i use brushes all the time but there is nothing like a sponge tip applicator! Thanks for the fab post and I will check the vid out when i get home cant watch it at work
love the video! I will also try sponge applicator!
the ONLY reason why I dont like sponge applicators is because they tend not to be as soft, Other than that, I think you do get great color payout from them.
i agree. i think the sponge allows you to control how much product you have on and allows for better control of where the product goes. i think it looks more intense. i think the brush does a great job but gives you a more blended look.
it seems like the sponge obsorbs the shadow therefore you use more product than with the brush.
First of all, I love that your nails on your left hand are polished orange and the nails on your right hand are…not. Very cute!
Anyway, I’m with you. Don’t sleep on sponges. They’re especially great for applying highlight to the inside corner of your eye…much more precise application than a brush. I also really like using sponges on my crease – again it’s more precise and then you can just blend it out with a brush so you don’t have demarcation lines.
Love the lovely sponges!
I’m happy I found your site. I’ve been looking for other black beauty blogs to add to my rooster! Yeah! I’m totally linking your blog to mine. Hopefully you’ll do the same!

I tagged you in the blog game sweets.
This is such a great post/video collabo’. I’ll be honest and say I forgot all about the handy dandy sponge-tip applicator since I invested in my brush collection. I can’t wait to try this with Chrome Yellow.

I like very much your videos!
You have a very sweety voice. I have ever used brush for eyeshadows, they are so smooth… but the colors lost some intensity as you say. But wathching the sponges… guau I will think on it. Sorry for my english.
you’re too adorable Brit
I must say sponge applicators are awesome. Totally great for packing on color and they actually blend really well. I have so many brushes from MAC it’s surreal but I keep reaching for my sponge applicators over and over again
I also find I get less fall out from sponge applicators!
I too agree that sponges soak up a ton of color which I why I only use it sparingly and only when I’m goin’ for a certain look. Definitely wouldn’t recommend using one for everyday looks.
Max—> Yes, I’m a hot mess with the orange polish on one hand. Ha!! That was for the nail polish review below.
Koi–> No problema…mi espanol es muy mal! Me gusta tu pagina!!!
Musey–> Ohhh, good point. I totally forgot to mention that in the post. I definitely get less fall out when using a sponge.
I prefer using the spongetip applicators because I want to be able to see the color I applied. Plus, I only do one shade across the lid and eyeliner. How much blending do I really need to do with just one color?
I love using brushes for blush, face powder, and applying liquid foundation.
I almost always save the sponges to smudge my eyeliner…also applying to the inner corner of the eye.
i like using the sponge-y thingies (sponge tip applicators??) to apply creme shadows as color bases. they work really nicely, and i have TONS of them. plus, on the off chance you DONT have any you can get a HUGEEE pack of them for $1. brushes just dont work for creme shadows…..
Kenzie—> That's a good point! A lot of brushes don't work as well with cream shadows. A sponge tip applicator is great for those!
