FOTD Friday: Playing with bright colors
More like “eye of the day”. And I really mean only ONE eye. HA! A friend of mine asked me about doing a “tropical” eye. She was convinced that darker skinned folx could not pull off wearing multiple BRIGHT colors on their lids. Aside from giving me some ideas for the “But Black Women Can’t” series, she also inspired me to play around in pigments. So here is what I came up with.
BASE:
UDPP
….if I were going to wear this OUTSIDE of the house, I probably would have applied another base like a MAC Paint or Paintpot….just for extra protection against creasing.
LID COLORS:
<--red--> NARS Emmanuel and MAC’s Mi’Lady (the red part, of course)
<--orange--> MAC Firespot and MAC Off the Radar pigment
<--yellow--> MAC Bright Sunshine and MAC Golden Lemon pigment
<--green--> Milani green and MAC Humid
…funky brows. Has it been 2 weeks yet?
A ton of colors, uh? I found that applying an eyeshadow and THEN a pigment gave me greater color payoff. I blended like mad with MAC Vanilla pigment. Because it has yellow undertones, it blended like a dream with my red, orange and yellow…which also had yellow undertones. Vanilla pigment is seriously the best product of my life!!!
I too was afraid of color because I thought it would make me look “clown-ish”, but I think the trick is how far UP you take your eyeshadow. My eyeshadow neeeever goes up beyond my crease. Except, of course my highlight. I keep all of the “lid” colors right on the lid. But I have have a weird eye shape in that I have a loooot of space between my lower lashline and lid so this is what works for me.
Find what works for you too and you won’t have to worry about looking Bobo.

Love you, beautiful people. Have a wonderful Fridayyyyy!!

it is so pretty and it doesn’t seem at all that you’re wearing many colors. Me too, my eyeshadow always stays on the crease. I am not very good at creating looks using 4-5 eyeshadows..at most 2, all over and then crease…
the eye look is soooo pretty
exactly it looks like you have just the right amount of colors, it looks great!

Nice. I’m still afraid of colors like that together…. but you know you pull it off.

i love it!
Wow, the colors look great. I’m always afraid of looking clownish, so that’s why I stay away from colors.
But, this looks wonderful. I’ll have to remember the tip about how far you take the color up.
Have a great weekend!!
love this look. it reminds me of culture club’s karma chameleon. it’s red gold (well, yellow) and green. I’ve done something like this with MAC’s juxt and amber lights. I can’t remember the burgandy color i use, though.
Very beautiful. It shows that woman of color can wear color if its applied right. Really its with any skin tone.
Love this look! Bright colors are perfect for summer!!!
Happy Friday!
This looks is so so cute! It kind of reminds me of Africa
I’m feeling that eye, Mama!
you pulled it off great love! i’m starting to feel a little self-conscious now in wearing brights because I’ve haven’t been wearing much lately that when I do it’s like BHAM! Lol. But nonetheless, we of the brown skin can pull off anything and everything
Very pretty! Your blending is great. I really need to work on mine. If I try for the multi color lid look it somehow ends up looking like one color.
This is so effing cute, I ADORE mixing bright shadows like that
I bow the eyeshadow master! Very cute! Very summery! Very Floridian!
i whole heartedly agree! keeping the shadow on the lid keeps it from being too wild. i’ve been learning to master that so that my looks can be tame for a corporate environment. it’s harder for me to take color above the crease now! lol i love when you play with colors. i like to see the combos you come up with and what works on your skin tone
Thank you lovelies!!
WHATSUP LUV! I think both looks were absolutely FABULOUS!
I love the rasta colors! I would’ve never thought of doing that. I might have to put in some work to try that
love it
