FOTD Friday: Vegan make-up and Captain Planet

Okay soooo even though this has unofficially been Green Week, don’t you think for one second that I won’t be reviewing and featuring more eco-friendly and green conscious products. It is becoming a way of life for me and I simply HAVE to share everything that I’m learning with you cool cats.

Now don’t hate me for saying it but if you haven’t heard of Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics, you’ve been living under a beauty rock. I’ve featured them on Clumps of Mascara before. Remember those polishes I snagged at The Makeup Show NYC? Yeah giiiirl…. I’ve been giving their pigments a whirl and oh oh oh oh oh ohmigosh. I actually hate that Usher song but it was so appropriate right now.

Pretty, uh? Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics is 100% vegan and PETA-approved. Ah-mazing!
Although I only used 3 of the shadows, I just had to show you swatches of all 5.

They are vibrant and just stunning. No ashy-ness here, brown girls! I started off with Ginger as my base colors.

And since I was feeling a little extra,  popped Nori in my outer-V.

When I think of orange and green, I think of the FAMU Rattlers, one of the finest HBCUs (historically black college and university) in the country. Nope, I didn’t go there but I grew up in Tallahassee, Florida where the Rattlers and FSU Seminoles (boooo!) run the entire city.

I lined up eyes with Physician Formula’s gel creamLiners. LOVE those. They are paraben-free and will replace my MAC fluidlines. Bye bye MAC. And then there is Lorac’s 3D lip gloss in. Remember that time I featured on of the shades here? I really love these green glosses. Free of synthetic ingredients and great staying power? Yes ma’am!

I donned my cheeks with Tarte’s Hotel Heiress.

Yep, I ended up purchasing it and LOVE it. That will definitely be replacing MAC’s Sweet As Cocoa. Sorry MAC. Don’t take it personal, kid. Yay for orange and green lids!

And it still looked good after a sweaty work-out.

Super impressed! You can grab the loose colour concentrates for $10 for a 2.5g jar. And I will definitely be reviewing the Physician Formula’s gel creamLiners. Nail polish of the week is Zoya’s Kelly.

Who remembers Captain Planet? *nostalgic sigh* Those were the days.

Off I go for a super long weekend. I’ll be volunteering and hanging out at the Tom Joyner Family Reunion at the Gaylord Palms. And  I may hit the beach. Enjoy your Labor Day, U.S. of A kids.

Love yooooou,

Amor de Lacquer: Nubar Venetian Glass collection

Welcome to another post of Amor de Lacquer….the series all about nail polish and nail care! Send me your requests, suggestions and ideas to Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com.
Oh la la! Nubar does it again!
What Nubar says about this collection, “Inspired by traditional Venetian glass, nubar’s Venetian Glass Collection captures the brilliant colors and flawless craftsmanship of the ancient traditional handmade glass of Venice. With vivid hues, a strong glass-flecked shimmer, and rich color saturation, these shades are as memorable as their inspiration.” (source)

I was so excited to try this collection. The colors are just so rich and Fall appropriate!

Verde means green in Spanish. But of course you knew that, right? Verde is also the name of the one of the most unique greens I have ever seen.

In darker settings, it looks like a dark forest green but when the light hits it…
….whoa mama!
Oro reminds me of Zoya’s Penny. I don’t wear golds often but when I do, I prefer them bling-y with nice orange undertones to them. And for that reason, I can show Oro lots of love!
Vaso is a purple that I’m surprised that I like! While purple polishes are my favorite, I don’t really like lavendar-esque type polishes. But Vaso is pretty! It adds a certain kind of sparkle to this collection.
Arencia is my favorite of the bunch. I just LOVE orange polishes and this may be my absolute favorite one. Nubar says that this orange “glows” and they ain’t lyin’. I can’t stop looking at my nails when I wear this.
…and I love how it looks with konad designs.
Caramello is a little warmer than her sister Oro but it still appeals to me. The application was a little funky. I applied 3 coats and still struggled with opacity. What’s that about yo?!
Vino is probably the most Fall color of the bunch. It’s deep and looks like it’s infused with dark cherry juice. Beautiful!
Bronzo is a burnt orange with a ton of bling.
Rosso is probably the most ordinary of the bunch. I think I have several reds that look like this. Still beautiful nonetheless!
I was totally wow-ed by this collection when I first laid my eyes on it. The finishes are fantastic. They have mico-glitter specks in them so while removing isn’t as bad as regular glitter polishes, it still requires some work. And by work, I mean a simple swipe won’t do it. I find that soaking a cotton pad with nail polish remover and placing it on the nail for a minute or so is the best route to go.

Arencia and Verde are the winners in this collection so if you don’t want to haul the entire collection, you just HAVE to take home those two.

You can buy the collection for $49.95 or purchase them individually for $7.49 here.

Guess who’s baaack?

I’m back!

I know, I know…I really should have never just dropped off of the face of the e-earth like that, uh? My bad, y’all. I took a much needed withdrawal from the innanet. I SO needed it. Not to mention I started an evening/weekend job and OMG, I completely failed in the time management department.

But I’m back now and I have SO much to share with you. Here’s what reviews you can look forward to in the coming weeks:

  • OCC lip tars. Yuuuum….
  • Clarisonic Plus
  • My annual visit to the dermatologist. Has my skin improved since last year? Pshttt.
  • Orly’s Plastix collection. Sick of mattes yet?
  • CoverFX foundation…I think I found a winner, y’all.
  • Mario Badescu skincare products
  • Huetiful Hair steamer. Amazing!!
  • Zoya’s newest polishes
  • CoverGirl Queen’s concealers…SO brown girl friendly
  • Make Up For Ever’s HD blush
  • An eye shadow palette that has 120 shadows. Wow…sers!

…my Twitter fam has asked me to review my new Android phone so I think I’ll be doing that too. Yep, after 2 years and 3 Blackberrys, I have broken up with RIM and so in love with Android!

That’s not even half of it. I will also be hosting, co-hosting and volunteering for several events (that you’re invited to) in the Central and South Florida…including Shecky’s Girl’s Night Out in Miami! And I’ve got a lot of giveaways lined up.

OH! And I’m actively posting on the Clumps of Mascara Tumblr blog. It’s just random shots of products, events and looks. Not to be confused with my travel blog which is also on Tumblr.

So yep…I’m back and ready to par-tay! How have you guys been? Try any new mascaras? Have any products you think I should try?

Enjoy your weekend and see you for Mascara Monday!

Amor de Lacquer: Night Skyline and 2010 collection

Welcome to another post of Amor de Lacquer….the series all about nail polish and nail care! Send me your requests, suggestions and ideas to Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com.

Nubar tries again to wow us with another unique collection. And like ALL of their collections, it works. This is one brand that keeps me on my toes as far as collection excitement goes. You never know what they’re going to come out with next.

Night Skyline consists of what Nubar calls ‘the shifting colors of  the evening’s sky’ (source). The 4-piece collection retailed at $24.99 includes three polish with a matte finish and a top coat. The idea is to rock the matte polish in all of its shine-less fashion AND apply a top coat if you need some extra bling. I get it, Nubar but this is what a lot of us have been doing for quite some time. I’ve always deemed matte polishes as versatile because you can wear them two different ways.

So the idea isn’t new but with Nubar’s creative collection theme and name, you can’t help be but drawn in.

Sunset is a stunning rich gold that is one of the few golds that compliments my skin tone. I think I prefer gold matte. It just looks so interesting and silky smooth.

Twilight reminds me a lot of Zoya’s Loredana, a similar gray matte polish that debuted in their Matte Velvet collection. Twilight does have a wee bit more silver in it but going on with the night sky theme, it works!

Midnight is your typical matte black polish. What I like about this one is that it has a bit of shine to it. In fact, it doesn’t look matte at all. Could this be enough to sway our matte haters?

In a separate 1-piece collection comes Nubar’s 2010.

If you’ve been on the hunt for its twin, Sally Hansen’s Hidden Treasure, this is the best way to go. 2010 is intended to be used as topcoat and it is a winner with all of its reflective glitter in a polychromatic base. Sounds technical, I know but watch this…

Hot stuff, uh? And it can be used on ANY kind of polish. Not bad for $7.49. You can cop that here.

Other Nubar collections I’ve reviewed:
Going Green
Modern Mattes
Chocolate Truffles
Prims
Sparkles
Risque Reds
Fortress

Amor de Lacquer: Diamond Cosmetics’ Summer 2010 collection

Welcome to another post of Amor de Lacquer….the series all about nail polish and nail care! Send me your requests, suggestions and ideas to Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com.

It’s summertime, y’all! I know so because the heat index in Central Florida stays around 109 degrees Fahrenheit. And what’s the only think that can cool a sista down in heat like that? That’s right…some cool AC. But pretty nail polishes from Diamond Cosmetics’ Summer collection don’t hurt either. :)

Magens Bay Blue

I LOVE this robin blue. It almost reminds me of Zoya’s Yummy but Magens Blue Bay is a wee bit cooler.

South Beach Pink

Not a super unique shade but the next time I take a stroll on South Beach’s Collins Ave, I’m going to rock!

Pelican Peak Purple

Although we may have seen several pastel purples, I’m thinking Diamond Cosmetics needed this. I haven’t seen a purple cream from them before. It applies beautifully but reminds me more of Spring than Summer.

I recently did a random weekend manicure and Magens Blue Bay and South Beach Pink

I applied 2 coats for each polish and didn’t have any problems. It’s not the most exciting collection from Diamond Cosmetics but if you don’t have similar colors, you can grab the entire collection for $8! Click here to snag it…you know you want it. :)

FOTD Friday: How to Wear A Red Lip

Hmmm mmmm, so y’all thought I was done talking about red lips, uh? Nope! You see…there are STILL several brown girls who think they can’t rock a red lip. Seriously, y’all? I can understand not wanting to wear a red lip work or class as it tends to be a little bold in those surroundings. But haven’t you had some moments when you just felt…”bad”? Fearless? Powerful? Some days call for a red lip. And so, my sisters…we’re going to find some ways to ease into wearing one.

You red-y?

First, remember this…if you’re not used to wearing the color red in the first place, it’s going to be mega hard getting used to wearing it on your lips. Take baby steps with the color. If you can’t rock it on the lips just yet, try wearing a red flower.

Yes, I know it’s very Niecy Nash of me but it’s Spring in Florida and this is how we roll, son! Ha! Okay, so even if you’re not down with wearing a red flower in your hair, try red finger nail polish.

Orly’s Poison Apple and Zoya’s America look stunning on the nails and can make you feel a wee bit more comfortable about rocking a red lip.

When it comes to wearing red lips, I always like to have a pretty neutral eye look. For today’s look I only used Urban Decay’s Primer Potion in Sin on the lid and liner on the waterline and lower lash line.

See the difference the liner on the left (my right) eye makes? Oh yeah! The reds we will be using today are MAC’s Port Red and Maybelline’s Are You Red-dy.

Never eeeever judge a lipstick by how it looks on the outside. What looks to be scary and highly pigmented lipstick can really be a moderately build-able lipstick. Don’t be intimidated!

Check out the differences between Port Red and Are You Red-dy.

Do you see how Port Red has a bit of a blue undertone to it? If you’re not used to rocking reds, this may not be the kind of red you want to start off with. One light coat of Are You Red-dy gives the lip a little red tint.

Rock this for a while and then head on other to step two. So you’re red-y (okay, I’ll stop…hehe) to get a little more red in, uh? Careful now. One swipe of Port Red is pretty heavy.

But…wowsers!!

If the red is still TOO red for you, you can always tone it down with a lip liner. Take MAC’s Vino for example…

This liner has a little pink in it and will darken the red. But, my sisters…puhlease do NOT forget to blend. The following is not a good look.

Yes…blend blend blend!

So while this lip is slightly darker than the previous one, it’s still red. I LOVE red lipstick. I’m not the type to wear it all the time but I love it when I’m feelin’ like a bad mamma jamma. So again, I urge my brown girls out there…try a red lip. No, you’re lips aren’t too big and no, your complexion is NOT too dark. There are many ways to rock a red lip. Do what works for you and feel confident doing it.

Love y’all!

Beauty Bee-haviors: I will only buy ____!!

Welcome to another post from the Beauty Bee-haviors series. In this series we have open discussions about any and everything in the beauty world.

We haven’t done one of these in a while, uh? This idea came from a girlfriend of mine who came over and spent some time rummaging through my make-up collection.

“Gosh B!” she says. “You sure do have a lot of different brands.”

“Uh, yeah…” I reply. “Don’t you?”

She turns and looks at me and says, “Girl, no! I only use ____. They are the greatest. They have the best shadows, liners, lipglosses and foundation. Why would I need to go anywhere else?”

My look…

Now, I’m not going to tell you which brand she was talking about. I’m sure you’ve already guessed it because like her, I was an obsessed and faithful fan of that brand. And ONLY that brand. It wasn’t until I got heavily involved with blogging and checked out other brands that I realized…um, there are A LOT of good cosmetic companies out there.

I simply don’t have a favorite. How can I? I love Maybelline, YSL, Lancôme and Rimmel mascaras. I love Stila, Clinique, NYX and Illamasqua glosses. I am in love with NARS, Iman and Cargo bronzers. Milani, MAC and Jordana make great lip liners and when it comes to polishes Zoya, China Glaze, Nubar, Sally Hansen, Orly, Diamond Comestics and Nfu-Oh rock! Just how in the world am I supposed to be faithful to one?

So my question to you iiiiis?

Are you faithful to only a handful of beauty brands or will buy anything that catches your eye?
